Studying

“Cherryl Birds Study 1″ 5×7″ pastel

This morning I tackled a study of my friend Cherryl and her two birds. I think I’m also going to put a couple of black and white sketches together. It’s value. I’m supposed to be using it. But I like the composition on this one anyway. I want to get the colors and values right before beginning the big one. Not so big, really. Just a 10×14. Feels huge, though, after all the five by sevens. And the more I practice, the better the final will be.

Here’s the video of the process. You’ll notice that I didn’t have all my photo references standing by before I started, so there’s some fiddling with the laptop, trying to get them all in the same program. Live and learn.

About Marie Marfia

Once upon a time I went to a belly dancing class and promptly fell in love with my instructor and her students. As a result, I'm on a mission to complete 100 portraits of belly dancers using soft pastels. I am hoping that by the end of this project I'll have gained some mastery of pastels and of myself. Feel free to stop by and share my journey as I learn about pastels, art and the life of a daily painter.
